We are hoping that the installation can work both ways — to upgrade from a current installation (aka, the installation that you have from following the current guide) as well as installing from a clean slate.

These updates are all compatible for HP Mini 110, so go ahead and feel free to install them. I have also updated the Compatible Updates guide with the list of these updates.

I am also pleased to share that we have broken the 500-visit-per-day mark on OSXHPMini.info! So spread the word to your Mini 110 friends!

The first thing you need to do is go ahead and grab the Chameleon v2 RC2 bootloader package here: http://chameleon.osx86.hu/file_download/36/Chameleon-2.0-RC2-r640.pkg.zip

The next thing you need to do is go ahead and open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.aap) and enter the following, hitting enter after every line:

sudo su

(enter password)

rm -rf /.Chameleon

All done with Terminal, so you can go ahead and close it.

Now, open the Chameleon v2 Installer package and click through the installer until you reach the Customize button, and uncheck the “Extras (kexts)” box. Finish the install.

That’s all! You’ve just upgraded your bootloader!

The only way to repair this is to revert back to the 10.5.7 kernel. You still get the updates that are applied in 10.5.8, we just need 10.5.7′s kernel back to enable sleep again.You can make sleep/resume work on 10.5.8 by replacing your kernel with 10.5.7′s kernel.

There’s something with Kernel 9.8.0 (10.5.8′s kernel) that breaks sleep. If you’re already on 10.5.8 and using kernel 9.8.0, setting Mac OS X to hibernatemode 0 will brick your install. I did that and the result was that I couldn’t even boot in superuser mode, got stuck at the infamous “MAC framework successfully initialized using 5242 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers“. Once you’ve replaced kernel 9.7.0, you can set hibernatemode to 0 to get rid of that “sleepimage has garbage” error message at boot up and recover the 2GB of hdd space occupied by the sleepimage in your /Private/var/vm folder. -LeMaurien19

Let’s get started. First of all, download the folowing zip file: 1057Kernel.and.Kexts.zip and if you do not have these already (you should) the HP Mini Essential Files.

1. After downloading the .zip, extract the contents to your desktop.
2. Open the 10.5.7Kernel_system_seatbelt folder.
3. Open the ShowAllFiles app.
4. Choose to SHOW all hidden files. Finder will automatically restart.
5. Back in the 10.5.7Kernel_system_seatbelt folder, you will now see a file called mach_kernel. Move that file directly to your Desktop.
6. Now we need Termnial. Go to Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app.

Type the following into terminal:

     sudo mv /mach_kernel /mach_kernel.patched

That will back up the current kernel as mach_kernel.patched.

Now type:

     sudo cp /Users/YOURUSERNAMEHERE/Desktop/mach_kernel /

to install the new kernel.

Exit Terminal.

Now, we need to go into our HP Mini Essential files (if you haven’t already, go ahead an extract the .zip file to the desktop.)

1. Open the HP Mini Essential Files folder.
2. Open the OSX86Tools_.1.0.150 folder.
3. Open OSX86Tools.
4. Click “Install Kexts“.
5. Navigate to your 10.5.7Kernel_system_seatbelt folder from earlier.
6. Choose the two kexts, “seatbelt.kext” and “System.kext“.
7. Click “OK” at all the prompts and choose to restart when it asks you to.
8. After you reboot, open OSX86Tools again, and check off Repair Permissions. Run the selected tasks.
9. Reboot.

After reboot, your sleep should now be working. It might take a minute for it to sleep, but it should fully go into sleep mode with the blinking power light. I hope this fix works for you, as it did for me.

A big thanks to LeMaurien19 over at MyHPMini.com forums for letting me use and his kernel, kexts, and info so that I could create a guide for you guys to use here at OSXHPMini.info. He frequently posts at MyMacbookMini.com.

The following kexts are necessary in making WiFi work:

• IO80211Family.kext
• IOUSBFamily.kext
• LAN9500.kext

It’s either all three or none, trust me. After many reboots and kext installs later, I found that if one is missing, WiFi will not work.

So, these kexts can be found in the HP Mini Essentials .zip file, which can be downloaded here: HP Mini Essential. zip

1. Extract the contents to your desktop, and open up the HP Mini Essential Files folder.
2. Open up OSX86Tools, (HP Mini Essential Files > OSX86Tools_1.0.150)
3. Select “Install Kexts“
4. Navigate to the “Kexts” folder within the HP Mini Essential files folder.
5. Choose the three kexts listed above to install.
6. At all the prompts, just hit OK to all except the last prompt when you are asked to reboot. Choose cancel.
7. After the kexts are installed and you chose to cancel stay in OSX86Tools and check off “Repair Permissions” and click “Run Selected Tasks“.
8. After it is finished (it will be a litle while) go ahead and reboot.

Install kexts. Your best friend.

This should solve your WiFi troubles. Oh, and before you ask, YES, it is normal for the WiFi light to be “pink”. It’s purely aesthetic. If it really bothers you, all you have to do is put the computer to sleep, and when you wake it again the WiFi light should be blue again.

Updates: I have added information on the guide on dual booting Windows 7 and OS X. There are unnecessary steps found on the Gears Diary guide that I link to, so I added some tips on how to do it on your Mini.

• Remote Desktop Client Update version 3.3.1
• Mac OS X Update 10.5.8 (see below if you are on 10.5.7 or lower)
  

All these updates will work with no issues on our netbooks, so don’t be afraid, go ahead and install them (Extra steps needed for 10.5.8 upgrade, see below.)

UPGRADE TO 10.5.8: So, more and more reports are coming in that the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Update can be installed with no bad effects. I decided to go for it and install it, and it worked great in the end. So, you can go ahead and select the Mac OS X 10.5.8 update in Software Update. After it installs and it reboots, you will notice that your screen resolution is smaller again, WiFi doesn’t work, and other things. Relax! The only thing you need to do is reinstall the kexts that are included in the HP Mini Essentials .zip file.  Here’s how to re-install the kexts, taken from the OS X Install Guide:

Open up OSX86Tools again (HP Mini Essential Files > OSX86Tools_1.0.150 > OSX86Tools.app ) and reinstall all the kexts in the kext folder.

1. Click on “Install kexts” towards the bottom right.
2. Find the kexts folder on your flash drive. Select the first one. This time, select all but one kext – Do not install the AppleIntelGMA950 kext. It will disable your screen.
3. Shift+Click the last one to select all.
4. After the installer completes, it will ask you to reboot. Go ahead and reboot.

Anyways, I launched the site a few days ago, and so far, there has been over 100 users coming through each day, and this site has only been posted on InsanelyMac and over on MyHPMini.com, which is awesome. I hope that the word gets out more, because this guide works, and works GREAT!

I just used this exact guide last night to install iDeneb to my HP Mini, and it worked great! I used my old, tired, noisy (fan is going out) PowerBook G4 to read the directions and load up iDeneb onto the flash drive and everything, and everything installed flawlessly.
I then installed Windows 7 and got it all set up to dual boot with OS X, and it all went well. I’m thinking of doing a guide for that as well.  Time will tell.
